Course Summary:

For the most part, children with neurological disorders will appear no different than any other child in your class. In terms of behavior, however, they will present challenges that will go above and beyond what a neurotypical (i.e., without neurological disorders) child might present. Because of that, you will need to develop a comprehensive plan that takes their differences into account.

This course contains 3 parts: an introduction and two modules focused on specific issues within the plan. In the first module, the focus is on how to detect the warning signs of an emotional meltdown which will help you to establish a basic framework of understanding that you can use to assist you as you prepare your individual classroom plan (ICP). In the second module, the focus shifts on how to actually handle a situation when a meltdown, rage or tantrum occurs. Additionally, the second module will provide information regarding peer relations and social skills; dealing with lying, stealing and swearing; daily routines and self-esteem building

Creating an effective influenza pandemic plan means preparing for every conceivable contingency. How well your community fares when under siege by a virulent flu virus will be directly related to how well local government has planned. Asperger Syndrome is considered the mildest and highest functioning form of a variety of neurological disorders that make up what is known as the autism spectrum. What can make working with children with Asperger Syndrome (AS) both fascinating, and yet often frustrating as well is their apparent normalcy. While children with more severe forms of autism will exhibit symptoms that are much easier for the untrained eye to discern, a child with AS will initially appear to be no different than any other student, perhaps just a bit "quirky". In the case of children with Asperger Syndrome, however, appearances can be deceiving.

In this course, the learner will gain understanding regarding behaviors that are typical of children with AS, but even more importantly, the "why" behind those behaviors. Once teachers and staff have an understanding of the "why", working with a child with AS may still be challenging, but it won't be a mystery.

No one should ever be afraid to come to school for fear of being victimized by a bully. Nevertheless, bullying does occur. When it does, schools need to be prepared to treat each incident seriously and take steps to assure that victims are kept safe from further intimidation and those who bring bullying incidents to the attention of teachers and administrators are safe from retaliation. Finally, the bullies themselves must be disciplined so that further incidents can be avoided. All of this involves changing the mindset of all the stakeholders in this issue.

Course Description

Paraprofessionals (or “paras”) perform many different functions in a school setting.  Some specialize in special education programs.  Others assist in bilingual education.  Some paras serve as administrative aides who help teachers by making copies, preparing materials for lessons, and monitoring hallways and study halls.  One thing all paras have in common is that they play vital roles in instruction, organization, and administration.

Course Summary:

With the passage of AB 1825, the state of California stepped to the forefront regarding the prevention of sexual harassment in the workplace. Working in the state of California as a manager or supervisor within your organization, you must be committed to the concept of a harassment-free workplace. Creating a great work environment that is free of harassment and discrimination is important for many reasons, first and foremost because it's the law. Both federal and California law require it.

Additionally, no one should ever have to work in fear. Defined in the simplest terms, child neglect is the failure to provide for a child's basic needs. Almost 2,000 children die annually as a result of neglect. As tragic as this is, an even larger number of children suffer long-term physical, psychological and behavioral problems as a result of neglect. Overburdened courts and social services systems do their best to help neglected children, but often the overwhelming case loads they work under make it difficult to overcome these problems.

Although no two abusive relationships are the same, there is a cycle of domestic abuse that is fairly predictable. Understanding the steps in this cycle of violence will help you to understand what motivates the abusive partner to inflict both the physical violence and psychological torment he perpetrates on his victim. If you choose to help victims of abuse by serving as a volunteer, you need to learn both the facts about domestic violence in general, and the facts about the services your organization has to offer.
